Eight (8) Weeks Before You Move

Check When Done  
  Establish a File for moving papers and receipt.
  Start obtaining estimates from several moving companies.
  Contact your insurance agent to find out what items are insured under your homeowner's policy during the move.
  Contact your child's school and arrange for their records to be sent to the new school.

Six (6) Weeks Before You Move

Check When Done  
  Choose a Mover.
  Fill out post office change of address cards.
  Clean out your closets to see which items you want to take, throw away, or sell.
  Have a garage sale/tag sale/yard sale.
  Inform credit card companies, car loan, etc., of change of address.
  Time to inform routine services of your move. This includes: grocery delivery, diaper delivery, milk delivery, bottled water delivery, tree/lawn service, pest control/extermination service, garbage/rubbish removal, dry cleaners, house cleaning service

Four (4) Weeks Before You Move

Check When Done  
  Start packing. Remember to wash your hands frequently so you don't dirty items.
  Start opening all the canned food you've saved in your pantry (or throw out the stuff that has spoiled.)
  If you are moving yourself, reserve a rental truck for the move.
  Send our any carpets, drapes, or clothing which you may want professionally cleaned.
  If you are moving a great distance, make travel plans for your family (hotels, rental cars, etc.)

Three (3) Weeks Before You Move

Check When Done  
  For Your Present Home: Call the utility companies so the week before your move you can have the gas meter read, a final electric meter reading, cable turned off, a final water meter reading, phone service terminated, and your oil tank measured.
  For Your New Home: Call the utility companies and have your gas and electric turned on before you arrive. Call the telephone company to arrange for new service.
  If you live in an apartment building, make sure you reserve the elevator for your move.
  Encourage your children to exchange addresses and telephone numbers with their friends.

Two (2) Weeks Before You Move

Check When Done  
  Make arrangements for your pets during the move. Review things with your veterinarian.
  Make sure your pets have identification tags.
  Dispose of items you can't move, such as flammable liquids, barbeque gas tanks, etc.)
  Have a mechanic check out your car for the long drive.
  Make arrangements for moving or giving away your plants.

It's This Week!!

Check When Done  
  Cancel your newspaper deliver.
  Make sure you have medications to last two weeks.
  Alert your present pharmacist that your prescriptions will have to be transferred once you find a pharmacy near your new home.
  Empty your safe deposit box.
  If moving it, defrost, clean and dry your refrigerator.
  Call your automobile club and review your travel route. Some highways don't permit commercial vehicles such as moving vans.
  Return borrowed items (library books, neighbor's lawn mower, etc.)

IT'S MOVING DAY! (TODAY!)

Check When Done  
  Make sure you review the bill of lading with your mover. There should be two copies made, one for the mover and one for you.
  Be on hand to supervise packing and unpacking of the moving van.
  Don't pack jewelry, money, or important papers. You should carry these yourself when moving.
  Double check rooms, closets, the basement, attic, apartment building storage bins, etc.

Congratulations. You've Moved. (Now the real work starts.)

Check When Done  
  Make sure you have homeowner's or renter's insurance.
  Register your car and get new license plates.
  Apply for a driver's license in your new state.
  Register to vote.
  Register your children in their new schools.
  Find out when rubish and recycling pick-ups are.
  Open new bank and checking accounts, order new checks with your new address.
